Shack Fires
Mike Barker and BuildingPhysics partner, Robert Arnott, are investigating the computer simulation of shack fires. In South African informal settlements are known as townships and informal dwellings as shacks. Shacks are typically constructed from corrugated iron and timber.
The idea is to use a combination of FDS and another special technology based on the work of Dr Keisuke Himoto
Can shack fires be prevented if better understood ? Given the ongoing dangers we must try. We eventually wish to model an overhead sprinkler system to test the ability to stop the spread of the fires.
